84, charing cross road, Helene Hanff

A book you can read in an hour, even when you have a cold. It's epistolary, which is always a comfort. It begins in 1950, so you have the additional comfort of reading about nylons and rations knowing you'll probably never have to endure either, unless by choice. Hanff requests odd (mostly non-fiction, mostly 19th century) books, and you get to know the titles of some odd books, some of which you may even have owned* and never read* yourself.  At the end you will probably cry a little bit, the result of too many hours napping and the fact that it is Sunday evening and you still have that cold and a sweet bookseller has died.
