psychic city chicago, Brad Steiger

I picked this book up at a used bookstore for obvious reasons. It was published in 1976 and has sometimes lopsided text, black and white photographs of local psychics and seekers, and an index in the back of all the fortune-tellers, ghost hunters and ESP students living in Chicago at the time, complete with addresses and phone numbers. It's a really charming book, and very clever. One of the first chapters, is about a couple who edit and publish a magazine dedicated to UFO sightings and other strange phenomena. They are the picture of normality, in photographs and in interviews. The man says something like, "We just publish what we think is interesting," and it makes you feel entirely right to read a book about the psychic scene in Chicago in the 1970s.

The chapter on ghosts is also pretty neat. There is an entire ghost house on the south side of Chicago, and the beautiful cemeteries of course have their share of hauntings.
