straight man, Richard Russo

I like to read books about professors almost as much as writers you are also professors like to write books about being professors.  The nice thing about these books is that almost always the hero, who is usually white, male, and middle-aged, considers himself at odds with his surroundings, despite the fact that he seems to me and must seem to his acquaintances to have been made for his surroundings.  There is nothing more comfortably expected than a white, male, middle-aged professor.  Their feeling out of place, then, brings about a nicely subtle war, a quiet adventure.   Straight Man is about a funny man who can't stop making jokes and can't figure out whether he would like to take his life seriously or not.  I've read it twice and liked it both times.
